Joyas Voladoras pays homage to an essay by American author Brian Doyle. His essay is an exploration of the heart: It ponders the frantic, wild hearts of hummingbirds, the vast hearts of whales, and the tiny hearts of insects and fish and mollusks. In the end, his essay is about the emotional construct of our own human hearts; ultimately, that is the inspiration for this piece.

Cadenzas and Metamorphoses takes apart the piano trio instrumentation and puts it back together, considering the different roles each player can hold within the ensemble. What if the instruments cohere? What if they clash? What if one player subverts or usurps the music of the others? This piece explores these questions in a broad, cyclic arc.

In life, we all have our pleas – personal and universal, reasonable and impossible, large and small. In this concerto, the violin is constantly pleading, with the orchestra and with itself. No matter how desperate or heartfelt, its pleas are never answered, so it laments time and time again with a mournful melody.

The word overlooking has two distinct connotations – a high vantage point, and a failure to notice something. This piece juxtaposes those starkly different definitions of the word. The musical ideas sometimes understand their place in the greater piece – as if overlooking the structure from a hilltop – but they sometimes overlook their role in the other way, spiraling out in new directions.
